EUROPEAN AWARENESS SEMINAR:

COPYRIGHT, DATA PROTECTION, INTERNET ACCESS

Copyright, data protection, and Internet access are issues that no
information professional can afford to neglect. It is particularly
important to stay aware of the implications of European legislation and
recent court decisions. This half-day seminar will provide a concise
updating from specialists who have been monitoring the progress of
relevant law and regulations on a regular basis. They will present the
current position, and there will be time to discuss issues with them and
ask those questions that concern you.

IGLA (The International Group of the Library Association).

IGLA exists to unite members of the Library Association and others round
the world who have a strong interest in the international arena of
information provision. Its purpose is to foster good international
relations within the profession, to alleviate professional isolation,
encourage closer international understanding, and to contribute to the
development of library and information services in less well-provided
regions.

DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION SCIENCE
LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY

The Department was established, under the name of the Department of
Information and Library Studies in 1972, and changed its name in January
1999 to reflect a continuing shift in emphasis of its programmes and
research. Librarianship is still, however, a major focus, along with
electronic publishing, document management, web-based applications,
knowledge management and the management of information services. The
Department received a 5 rating in the last Research Assessment Exercise.

THE LEGAL AND POLICY RESEARCH GROUP

The Group was set up in 1998, under the leadership of Professor Charles
Oppenheim. It brings together existing expertise on legal, ethical and
policy matters in the Department for a programme of research,
publication and public events. Members include teaching staff, funded
researchers, and research students of the Department. It has already
received a series of grants from: the Data Protection Registrar and the
BSI for research by Charles Oppenheim and Eric Davies; from the Council
of Europe for Paul Sturges' work on freedom of expression and public
access to networked information; and from Resource for a project,
beginning in 2000, on privacy in the digital library. 

ERIC DAVIES

Director of the Library and Information Statistics Unit (LISU) at
Loughborough University, former copyright adviser to the University, and
author of many publications including Data protection: a guide for
library and information management, Oxford: Elsevier, 1984.

CHARLES OPPENHEIM

Professor in the Department of Information Science, lecturer and
consultant on the whole range of information policy matters, including
copyright, and author of the Lislex series in Journal of Information
Science, and many other publications, including The legal and regulatory
environment for electronic information, 3rd ed Calne: Infonortics, 1999.

PAUL STURGES

Chair of IGLA and Reader in Libraries in Social Development, in the
Department of Information Science. Editor (with John Feather) of
International Encyclopedia of Information and Library Science, London:
Routledge, 1997, and consultant to the Council of Europe on information
policy matters including freedom of information.
