On the Outskirts of Modernity:
Twentieth Century Italian Cityscapes
October 6-7, 2000
CALL FOR PAPERS
Since the last decades of the 19th Century, urban landscapes have undergone
radical changes and have gradually adapted to the needs of a fast growing
industrial society, giving new shape to the image of the city, its
perception and representation. Progressing at its own pace, burdened by its
glorious past and by its fragmented recent history, Italy uniquely
exemplifies the contradictions and conflicts that characterise modernity and
modern times. The unifying theme of the conference will be the Italian City
as a paradigm of resistance to and a quest for modernity.
Although the conference will focus primarily on Italy and Italian
literature, comparative and interdisciplinary approaches are strongly
encouraged. Topics may encompass other literatures, architecture, the arts,
cinema, gender studies, philosophy.
Send a paper abstract of c. 200 wds. by May 30, 2000 to the Conference
Steering Committee at the above address. Selected papers will be published
in a special issue of La Fusta, Journal of Italian Literature and Culture.
Call (732) 932-7031 or fax (732) 932-1686 or e-mail at
[log in to unmask] for more information. We look forward to your
contribution.
