Challenge Europe - on-line Journal - 
shaping the debate


Mailing List Subscriber Update

There has been a positive and enthusiastic response from throughout Europe
to the first Issue of Challenge Europe On-Line Journal which was launched by
The European Policy Centre in March 2000. More than 15,000 hits were
recorded on our web site in the 24 hours following the Launch.

European Commissioner for Enterprise and Information Society, Erkki Liikanen
has emailed a message of support:

"I would like to send my sincere congratulations to all concerned on the
launch of Challenge Europe. I am sure that Challenge Europe will be read
with great interest not only throughout the European Union but world wide." 


Responses 

A number of reactions and comments have been received including:

Andrew Duff MEP, Rapporteur for the European Parliament on the Issue of a
European Union Charter of Fundamental Rights - commenting on the views of
Matthew Heim "A European Union Charter of Fundamental Rights - A Legal View"

Professor Juliet Lodge, University of Leeds (UK) - in response to John
Palmer's article "Shaping the New Europe- If Not Now: When?"

Jean-Guy Giraud, Rapporteur from 1997 to 1999 of the European Movement
International - in response to the articles by Jacques Delors "The Need to
Move Beyond Amsterdam" and Francoise de La Serre "One Europe or Several?"

Professor Simon Duke of the European Institute of Public Administration - in
response to 'A Common Defence Policy - What Does It Mean for the EU
Institutions?' by Antonio Missiroli 

James Wilson, Public Policy Executive, Bass PLC - reacting to the article by
Giampiero Alhadeff "A European Union Charter of Fundamental Rights - The
Heart of Europe"

Next Issue: 
The next issue, top be launched by the end of June, will have Enlargement as

Technical update: 
The EPC web site is currently undergoing major technical and structure
changes which, when completed, will allow full access to the site and the
Journal via Microsoft Internet explorer and Netscape Navigator.  The Journal
itself will also be structured into "theme" sections for easier navigation
and also feature a database to search articles.
Challenge Europe exists for its readers to become actively involved in the
European debate- Please leave your reactions and comments and help shape a
debate which is already involving thousands of readers every week!
