Hi,

I am not aware of any guidelines, however, the ones for the students should
be a good starting point. Many of the same issues will arise, and I
suspect that it is just a case of making sure the student is aware of the
possible pitfalls of non-disclosure, in a way that does not make them feel
pressured to do so. This is always a difficult issue, and the sort of
problem that might need discussing would depend on the disability concerned.
It could be not using accessible media to communicate, any resultant
interview being staged in a non-accessible venue, inappropriate use of
psychometric tests etc.

Cheers

Subject: Academic referees and disability disclosure

An academic colleague has asked for advice on writing a
reference for a student who does not want his/her disability
disclosed. The usual sources of guidance (SKILL/CANDO etc)
deal with disclosure issues for the student (ie. discuss the
situation with the referee) but I can't find any guidelines
for the referees themselves.

Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Thanks
