Apologies for Cross Posting
May 18th 2000, Half Day Workshop, Central Birmingham.
Use of key skills and occupational standards in course design.
The Key/Core Skills Knowledge and Understanding in the Built Environment
project (K3UBE) has been funded by the European Social Fund and carried out
by a research team from the Built Environment Education Development Services
Unit at the University of Central England. This team has been charged with
investigating and testing ways of using occupational standards, key skills
and knowledge and understanding in aiding Higher Education course designers.
This workshop will review the ways in which the team has used key skills and
occupational standards, to identify skills and knowledge elements which can
be expressed in the workplace, and their development and assessment within a
work based unit on a post graduate programme in town planning.
A second presentation will explore ways in which the team has used
occupational standards and key skills to design and refine a Computer Aided
Design study course as part of an undergraduate programme in Landscape
Design. The intention was to allow a national accreditation of this part of
the course and occupational standards and key skills were used as the basis
of the programme.
The approach is designed to be transferable and the workshop will appeal to
all involved in course design and the use of occupational standards and
vocational approaches to education.
The event is free, and runs from 12.30 to 4.30, with a buffet lunch, short
presentations, group and plenary sessions and an opportunity to question and
discuss the approach.
