Comedy and Commentary: The New Italian Cinema of Paolo Virzi'
April 7-9, 2000
Born in Livorno in 1964, Paolo Virzi' studied Literature and Philosophy at
the University of Pisa and then earned a diploma in screen writing at the
Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome in 1987. His directorial
debut was in 1994 with La Bella Vita for which he cowrote the story and the
screenplay together with Francesco Bruni; the film was presented at the
Venice Film Festival. It was awarded the Ciak d'Oro for best film in the
Panorama Italiano section and the Kodak award for best directorial debut.
In 1995 he won the Nastro D'Argento for best first film. In 1995 he
directed Ferie D'Agosto, for which he wrote the story and cowrote the
screenplay with his fellow collaborator Francesco Bruni, and was awarded
the David di Donatello for best film in 1996. In 1997, he directed
Ovosodo, from a screenplay written by himself, Francesco Bruni and one of
their mentors. Ovosodo won the Special Jury Award at the Venice Film
Festival, Ciak d'Oro for best screenplay.

Viano (Wellesley). Refreshments will be served.
6:30 pm Screening: Anna Maria Tatò, Marcello Mastroianni. I remember
(16mm, 90min., subtitled).
