There are some interesting snippets of information about the spa at Buxton
in'The North Derbyshire Archeological Survey' (ISBN 0950770701).
It's a settlement which grew around a Romano-Celtic religious cult, centred
on natureal hot and cold springs and dedicated to the waters and the sacred
grove of the Celtic goddess Arnemetia.
In 1975, a votive deposit of 232 roman coins, 3 bronze bracelets and a wire
clasp (ranging in date from 1st century AD to AD 400) came to light after the
High Peak Borough Council removed a swimming pool floor.. The finds are
currently(late eighties) in the care of the Buxton Technical Department of
the High Peak Borough Council.
