Dear Bill
I just finished a year in England doing my MA in medieval history, and left
with the impression that to be a medievalist one had to be stuffy and
serious with no sense of humor and no fun was to be had (imagine how hard
that was for me studying medieval popes!). It's nice to see other
medievalists (particularly of religion) can see the fun side in it all.
Before I left LA I had an "Orgy of the Chestnuts '98" party, where everyone
was encouraged to come as their favorite pope, saint, or martyr (this
modeled, of course, after the imfamous Orgy of the Chestnuts thrown by my
favorite Pope Alexander VI (1492-1503). There was no sex at my party
though. Instead, we screened Jerry springer's too hot for tv, but the big
event was the Martin Luther Protestant Pinata, filled iwth band-aids
(fresh), canned "meat food products", squirt guns, etc. I, of course, was
dressed as Pope Joan and my faithful rottweiller wore a red shoulderpad on
her head and a red jeweled cape and was known as Jesse Cardinal Puppies.

Pope Joan II
