INFORMATION VISUALISATION
Invitation to an IST Workshop on 12 April 2000, 9:30 - 16:30, in
Luxembourg
Dear Colleague,
Computer graphics have evolved beyond many expectations since the first
experiments in the early 1960s. Today, visualisation methods and tools
can be applied, not only to analyse and handle large and complex
(multimedia) data sets but also to facilitate navigation and search
through (distributed) information repositories. Advances in hardware and
software technologies continue to extend the scope of applications.
Area 5 of Key Action III (Information Access, Filtering, Analysis and
Handling) of the European Union's IST Programme recognizes these
developments. Action Line III.4.2 of the IST Work Programme 2000
provides for R&D projects focusing on Information Visualisation,
including
· scientific visualisation,
· new paradigms for the visual representation of information spaces
("mapping cyberspace"), visualisation-based navigation and search
techniques,
· interactive animation, manipulation of 3D objects, handling very
large-scale multimedia content, etc.
We are planning a workshop on 12 April 2000, in Luxembourg, in order to
identify priority problems of applied research and development, to be
tackled at European level. It is aimed at researchers and technology
developers, as well as at organisations interested in setting up
demonstrations of new technologies and applications.
The event will provide an opportunity to contribute to the research
agenda of an area of growing importance. A draft programme as well as an
excerpt from the IST Work Programme 2000 are attached (see also
http://www.diffuse.org/iaf). Attendance is free.
If you wish to participate please return the enclosed reply form at your
earliest convenience.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours sincerely
Hans-Georg Stork
