ESRC CASE studentship 2001-2004
The Centre for Applied Social Research within the Department of
Sociology ({ HYPERLINK http://les.man.ac.uk/sociology/) }http://les.man.ac.uk/sociology/) at the University of
Manchester has been awarded a three-year full-time ESRC CASE
doctoral research studentship beginning in September 2000.
The studentship provides funding to work in collaboration with the
National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) on a project
entitled: ‘The potential economic impact of the social economy and
its contribution to regional regeneration’. The academic supervisor
will be Professor Peter Halfpenny ({ HYPERLINK mailto:[log in to unmask] [log in to unmask]).
Margaret Bolton, Director of Policy at the NCVO, will be the
collaborating organisation’s supervisor.
The National Council for Voluntary Organisations is an umbrella
body with a membership of nearly 1,400 voluntary organisations in
England. It represents the views of its members and the wider
voluntary sector to government, the Charity Commission, the EU
and other bodies. It is also at the leading edge of research into the
voluntary sector - its work in this area carries considerable weight
with policy makers.
The aim of the CASE project is to examine the extent to which the
social economy – including co-operatives, social businesses,
credit unions and community enterprises developed by social
entrepreneurs – can contribute to the regeneration of communities
in the regions. It is anticipated that the research will prove useful
both to voluntary sector organisations and Regional Development
Agencies in formulating plans for productive partnerships, and to
the National Council for Voluntary Organisations in linking together
and developing appropriate services to support the varied agencies
that make up the social economy.
Up to three months of the three-year studentship will be spent at
NCVO’s offices in London, probably spread over several short
visits. It is vital that the applicant is free to travel and make these
visits. Expenses will be paid.
Applicants must have a good (upper second or first) social science
or other relevant degree and preference will be given to those with
demonstrable research skills and experience, and/or with
knowledge of the voluntary sector and the challenges it currently
faces. Candidates must meet the standard eligibility criteria for
ESRC studentships (see http://www.esrc.ac.uk). The studentship
will pay postgraduate tuition fees and it carries a tax-free
maintenance grant of £7,995 per annum, which is the value of a
normal ESRC research studentship enhanced by an additional
£1,375 per annum.
The closing date for applications is Friday 28 April 2000.
Applications forms are available from Ann Cronley, Postgraduate
Secretary, Department of Sociology, University of Manchester,
Manchester, M13 9PL, telephone 0161 257 2501, fax 0161 275
2462, email { HYPERLINK mailto:[log in to unmask] [log in to unmask] Completed applications must
be accompanied by a one-page statement explaining why the
applicant is suitable and qualified for this particular studentship.
