I am not sure what Aniko's subject area actually is, as a
newcomer to this list myself, but Thomas' exhortation to
him to go to Italy makes me mindful of Katherine Hillard's
not 'To The Student Of Dante.' in her 1889 translation of
'Il Convito', which also contains a double entendre of
which I am sure, or at least hope, this prim and proper
Victorian lady was ignorant:
'The best way to understand him [Dante] -if I may be
permitted to recommend to others the course I have found
advantageous, - is first, to understand a thorough
knowledge of his language (which can only be properly done
by several years' residence in Italy, and intercourse with
intelligent Italians.'
Thomas and I can rest our 'Visit Italy' case there, I
think!
Life would be so much simpler if one had Miss Hillard's
obviously inexhaustible means!
