Most publications issue staff members with style guides which usually
include which terms and phrases are acceptable and which are taboo.
A fairly authoritative style guide referred to by many journalists is that
of the Associated Press. It is available to the public for about $12;
college bookstores and AP members get a discount. There is more information

I've heard mixed reports on how it deals with disability reporting, but
have not seen it myself so cannot comment.
