dear list members,
Ethnography as a research method has been employed within the field of
disabilities research - i know of some excellent examples from among
members of this list. Are there, however, examples of ethnographic
studies carried out by blind or partially sighted researchers? The
subject of the research might be anything - I mean does not have to be
related to the experience of disability, but might be.
My reason for asking - I teach a course called Culture and Ethnography
within a Social Studies degree programme. The students need to carry out
an ethnographic research project: I provide them with awareness of what
the methodology is characterised by - including - obviously -
'Observation' which implies sight and ability to attend to detail. We
also have discussed the importance of all the senses in gathering data -
but I could do with some role models - or examples of work to enable
the blind or partially sighted members of the student group to feel more
supported --
