I'm currently writing up a survey of an early 20th century navvy
settlement in the Peak District for land management plans. As part of its
interpretation I am situating its construction & layout in contemporary &
19th century social attitudes to navvies, the history of navvy culture &
social conditions, and the late-19th century industrial model villages such
as Port Sunlight & Bournville. I would also like to compare the settlement
with army and prison camps - does anyone know of any archaeological,
historical or sociological research into such camps that may be of use?
Thanks in advance,
Bill
