I think we would identify Wales as broadly Christian at the end of the
roman period. At any rate, there are very few conversion-and-martyrdom
narratives in the vitae of the Welsh saints. The church which Gildas
attacks in De Excidio is one which has been around long enough to get
complacent and corrupt. Augustine certainly found plenty of Christians when
he got to the Severn - and fell out with them rather spectacularly.
