The recent debate about changing the name of SMR's puts me in mind of a
time a local Councillor rang me up. He was adamant that I should tell
him in what year a particular park bench had been erected and at whose
bequest. He was most upset that I didn't know and took some convincing
that the majority of the records we kept refered to monuments at least
several hundered years old, after all I was the 'Sites and Monuments
Record Officer'.
This anecdote does has a serious point which is that SMR's have no
reference to archaeology in their title. I would prefer to keep any new
name simple, perhaps Local Archaeology Record, National Archaeology
Record etc.
