Conference Announcement and Final Call for Papers
Ecological Modernization in Russia
International Conference
25.-27.4.2000, Helsinki, Finland
You are invited to participate in an International Conference on
Ecological Modernization in Russia, organized by the
Aleksanteri Institute(The Finnish Centre for Russian and East
European Studies) in co-operation with Department of Social
Policy, University of Helsinki, and Finnish Society for
Environmental Social Science.
The workshops are organised around such questions as the
following:
· Is new Russian economy inevitably caught on a treadmill,
which drives it towards collapse, or is an ecologically
sustainable modern society a feasible option?
· Can we open up and revitalise the social sciences in order to
find innovative approaches for diagnosing environmental
predicaments in Russia?
· Can we overcome the Russian environmental crises by
making use of the potentialities of modernity or should we have
to leave the path of enlightenment modernity for
something else?
· To what extent are local, national or international policies able
to develop strategies for ecological modernisation in Russia?
The conference organizers would welcome papers on any of
these themes.
