Local Economy Policy Unit Seminar, 22nd March 2000 in London
"Financial Exclusion, local banking and credit unions: how to get
money into communities".
The Social Exclusion Unit's Policy Action Teams have recently
completed a report into Financial Exclusion. This seminar will
examine latest thinking and best practice in combating financial
exclusion in all its forms. In particular, the seminar will examine
what projects are most effective in addressing these issues locally,
what we can learn from projects in the South of the Globe, and which
actions are best undertaken by the mainstream financial
infrastructure.
Key Issues
· What is financial exclusion and what problems does it cause? Is it
more than the lack of money associated with poverty?
· What local initiatives are most effective at combating financial
exclusion?
· What financial services do excluded communities want, and who is
best placed to provide them?
· How can mainstream financial institutions help the most excluded
gain access to financial services?
· What can we learn from southern countries where micro-finance is
more developed?
