Hello All
I have no objections to the default reply setting being changed. However, I
think that the ability to send off-list comments probably results in fewer
'flamings' - especially when replies correct perceived errors of fact in the
original posting, which may have the figurative effect of telling the
original contributor to "suck eggs" (so sue me, I'm Australian...but
definitely not a chicken-ist) in a very public way and which I have often
observed to be a very clear put down. Put downs often make not only the
targeted individual feel bad but also those who observe it occurring. Which
is not to say that we shouldn't continue to enjoy vigorous debate either.
Also, when it seems that few people are interested in a particular debate,
it may be better to take the discussion off-list to the few people who have
the interest to pursue it.
Lastly, some people (especially newer list members) may feel a bit nervous
about global posting and prefer to debate 'small scale' first until they
realise that everyone's view is relevant and important.
Even if the default settings are changed, discretion about 'who' (collective
or singular) to reply to should prevail.
Cheers!
Lisa

Hi Cathy, all,
actually I think theres a much simpler reason why many people reply
privately rather than to the list,
because this particular list is set to send message replies to the original
sender rather than back to the list.
unless your actively remembering to change the return the address in the to
field after hitting reply the message isn't seen by the list.
I know I for one, perhaps its because I'm blind and don't make the effert to
go and check the "to" field, am guilty of hitting reply and send without a
second thought as to where its going.
maybe if everyone thinks it would be of benefit we could talk the list
owner(s) in to changing the list seetings so replies are sent to list.
this is the default setting on many of my other mailbase lists and only very
occasionally results in messages which were meant to be private getting
posted to list.
don't think we want this thread to turn in to a "me to" type thing with
everyone saying they think replies should go to list but maybe anyone with
strong objections could speak up either on list or to list owners, if there
are non eiher list owner will take note and do the necessary or someone (I'm
guess I'm volunteering) will make an approach with this suggestion.

Dear List members
Thanks so much (so far) for the many helpful contributions on the
question of ethnography and visual impairment.
As well as on list suggestions, there have been quite a few off-list. As
list owner of mailbase list history-child-family, I often feel that
valuable contributions get hidden from view in this way - although I
respect that individuals prefer to offer information individually.
I wonder, sometimes, how people decide - whether to post to the list or
to the individual - is it the content that dictates?
Anyway - I wanted to post to the list the comments that I have received
off list - please let me know in the next few days if you'd prefer that
I did not send your individual response - otherwise I'll go ahead.
Cathy
