Oficina Nacional de Diseño Industrial (ONDI) 47 No. 3446 esq. 41, Rpto. Kohly, Playa, Ciudad de La Habana 11300, Cuba. Phone.(537) 23 0797 Fax: (537) 23 0798. For establishing a meeting point where to exchange ideas, to analyze the times passed and to find the sense for real progress, the National Office for Industrial Design (ONDI) calls together all friends, professionals and students all around the world, to take part in the Sixth Meeting on Design. To accomplish this, we have chosen the seventh, eighth and ninth of June, 2000, at the Conventions Center. On this occasion, we will go deep into the place and duties of Design on three main topics: Teaching of Design; History, Studies and Theory of Design; New Information and Communication Technologies. And some more specific ones like Technological Innovation and Twenty Years of the National Office for Industrial Design (ONDI) as the Manager of Design in Cuba. This time, our event will be sponsored by the Latin-American Association of Design (ALADI), its National Committee in Cuba, the Ministry of Light Industry (MINIL) and the Ministry of Economy and Planning. Parallel to this event and in the same center, it will be held the Second Meeting of Historians of Design. The beginning of the third millenium will be the appropriate space to talk about the history and projection of Design; the environment and the man for whom we design. Such topics raise different criteria and positions. We do invite you to take part in this analysis by presenting deep reflections and specific conclusions. Papers Abstracts in no more than 250 words must be delivered before April 30th, 2000. The following data must also be included: topic, title, author(s), institution and country. The author(s) must submit the paper(s), on magnetic disks if possible, on the accreditation to the Meeting. The official languages are Spanish and English. A commission, after analyzing the abstracts, will select those papers to be presented in the event, on the basis of their professional value and their correspondence to the suggested topics. The results of such analysis will be given as soon as possible. Masterly Lectures Outstanding international characters in the world of Design have been invited to deliver lectures on the Meeting. We already have confirmations of great importance such as those from: Mr. Augusto Morelo, President of ICSID, International Council of Societies of Industrial Design; Gui Bonsiepe, Designer and Professor from the University of Colonia, Germany; Professor PhD. Oscar Salina and Anna Calvera, Full Professor of the Department of Design and Image from the University of Barcelona Special Participants Some important officials from the Ministries of Culture and of Economy of Cuba will present some questions related with the position of the country in relation to Design and the general topics of the event, leaving time for exchange in open debates. Exhibits The Organizing Committee has reserved an area for exhibits where participants (whether individuals or firms) can present their products, provided such enterprises supply means for design, produce communications design and industrial design, or have high-quality design products. Second Meeting of Historians of Design At the time of the Sixth Meeting, the Second Meeting of Historians of Design will be held. Like its first edition (Barcelona, 1999), its purpose is to promote the professional recognition of the history of design. Following the general topic of ¨Emergence of the regional stories of design¨ there will be four working groups: Historiography and Theory of Design; Research; Museology and Documentation; Teaching; The role of technology in the history of design; The relationship between Design, Fine Arts and Architecture throughout this century. This meeting is sponsored by the History of Design Scientific Committee of Barcelona´99. For more information contact the Web site www.standbynet.org. Abstracts must be sent to the Organizing Committee before April 30th, 2000. You should be specific on your participation in this event. Courses The Higher Institute of Industrial Design (ISDI) will offer courses-workshops on June the fifth and sixth on the specialties of Industrial Design and Communications Design. The main topics to be covered are: Design Management; Cognitive Ergonomics; Visual Forms Discourse; The Eighth Column of Design (Physics) and Visual Communications. Those interested can register and pay for the chosen course during the event, directly to ISDI. The registration fee will be of $110.00 US, independent of that for the event. Collateral Program For having a more pleasant stay in Cuba, the Organizing Committee is preparing a group of interesting socio-cultural activities, namely: a show of the most advanced and representative Cuban fashion designs, a visit to the Scale Model of the City and to the EXPOCUBA Exhibitions Complex. Registration If you are interested in participating on the Sixth Meeting on Design, you should send the following data to the Organizing Committee: full name, institution, specialty, occupation and whether you are to participate as presenter or observer. As for presenters, you should indicate the topic and the title of the paper. If you are also interested in taking any of the courses, you should indicate your address, country, Fax, E-mail and telephone. These data should be sent as soon as possible due to organizational reasons and to help directly sending you any additional information. Registration fees will be: $280,00 US for Delegates, $200,00 US for Students and $150,00 US for Companions. To facilitate the participation of all those interested, there are promotional fees through the Agencies of the Conventions Center (see attached list). These agencies also offer services for visa procedures, lodging, air and land transfers, sending of technical reports and any other information concerning the event. The promotional fees through the Representative Agencies will be: $180,00 for Delegates, $100,00 US for Students and $85,00 US for Companions. Both types of fees for the delegates (professionals and students) cover the accreditation, access to all activities of the program, documentation, as well as the welcoming and farewell parties and the opening and closing ceremonies. Those for companions, on the other hand, cover the welcoming and farewell parties, souvenirs and optionals.
