The BAEM have responded to Tony Blair's speech at St Thomas' as follows:

----------------------------------------------------

"The BAEM wishes to respond to Mr Blair's speech at St Thomas's hospital on
A&E Modernisation.

The association wishes to acknowledge the sterling work done by staff in
Accident & Emergency departments in the U.K. over recent years, often in
difficult circumstances and with inadequate resources. Last year it
welcomed the investment in modernising departments when it was announced,
with plans to improve the environments of many Accident & Emergency
departments. However it is important to realise that the specialty has been
striving for many years to provide emergency healthcare using innovative
systems such as fast-tracking patients with hip fractures, emergency nurse
practitioners working autonomously, nurses utilising extended skills and
staff working within a multi-disciplinary environment. These systems have
been developed in Accident & Emergency departments over a long period
despite diminishing resources and an increasing demand on services.

We are pleased that Mr Blair has reported an increased numbers of doctors in
the NHS but we are equally concerned as this is at variance with the
planned, significant, reduction in the number of Specialist Registrar posts
in Accident & Emergency medicine. The planned reduction will not result in
'experienced and skilled consultants being available to 'focus' on 'the most
complex cases' as Mr Blair has stated.

Furthermore the ability of Accident & Emergency departments to provide
optimal care for acutely ill and injured patients is also dependent on other
factors within the health service. We wish to point out, yet again, that
many of the problems have to do with factors beyond the influence of the
Accident & Emergency department such as the numbers of acute hospital beds
and critical care beds available. The problems that many Accident &
Emergency departments encounter cannot be solved internally and a whole
systems approach must be adopted in order to provide a quality service. "
