If you don't mind me blowing my group's horn--the New Zealand Digital Library
project uses Greenstone software, which we've developed ourselves. Check out
http://www.nzdl.org for a set of sample collections. The software can link
page images with indexed text (see the Niupepa collection of Maori language
newspapers), can link sound/image/video files with descriptive text or
bibliographic data, and can handle a number of different languages (including
the ability to plug in a language-specific stemmer, if appropriate, to
support searching).
The software is robust, and can deal with large-ish collections. Our largest
current collection indexes on the *complete* text of about 48K technical repor
ts. In the past we've built a collection of about 10 million MARC records.
Greenstone is Open Source, if you're interested in using it to develop a
collection of your own. The software has been around for a couple of years
now, and has been used by other organizations in Europe. We're a stable,
continuing research group, so we'll be around for the forseeable future to
maintain it and work with users. And we're always happy to see new users!
Cheers,
