VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM STUDY DAY
EXPRESSIONISM AND MODERNITY:
Function and meaning in German Expressionist prints
Saturday 22 January 2000, 10.30-16.45
V&A Lecture Theatre
The V&A boasts a significant holding of German Expressionist
print material, whether as individual fine art prints of the main
Expressionist groups including Die Brücke and Der Blaue
Reiter or as examples of fine art book publishing in the National
Art Library.
While historically the reception of German art in Britain has
been slow, in recent years there has been a revival of interest
in the chequered history of German modernism through a
number of major exhibitions of imported works from Germany
and the USA. This study day is intended to examine the
peculiar role that the graphic arts had in the dissemination and
also the formation of an aesthetic of German modernism during
the first half of this century. The medium of print had special
resonance for German modernist artists, both as a means of
direct and often politicised expression but also for the more
practical purposes of economy and propensity for mass
production, distribution and sale. The study day will be of
interest to fine art students, specialist print dealers, academics,
cultural historians and non-specialist adult audiences.
Programme
The study day will be chaired by Dr Dorothy Rowe, University
of Surrey Roehampton.
