Hello Rebecca,
I am A third year student and recently done an assignment on a related
topic. Tests that I came across during a review of the literature include:
An instument called the 'Elderly At Risk Rating Scale.' This covers all
areas specified for over75 health checks and comprises 20 questions.
Further details can be found in:
Donald IP, Development of a Modified Winchester Disability Scale - the
elderly at risk rating scale, J Epidemiol Comm Health 1997;51:558-63.
In the following study, standing on 1 leg was used as a measure of postural
instability and was associated with risk of falling.
Nevitt MC, Cummings SR, Kidd S, Black D, Risk Factors For Recurrent
Nonsyncopal Falls. JAMA 1989;261:2663-68
A common inexpensive instrument for measuring postural instability is the
Wright-Codoc ataxia meter. Further details can be found in:
Campbell AJ, Borrie MJ, Spears GF. Risk factors for falls in a community
based prospective study of people 70 years and older. J Gerontol Med Sci
1989;44:112-17
Details of the tests mentioned by Jan Kool can be found in:
Tinetti ME, Williams TF, Mayewski R. Fall Risk index for elderly patients
based on a number of chronic disabilities. Am J Med 1986;80:429-34. This
index was later updated but I do not have the referance for the updated
version.
Duncan PW, Weiner DK, Chandler J, Studenski S. Functioal reach: a new
clinical measure of balance. J Gerontol Med Sci 1991;45:M192-97
Hope some of these might be of use to you,
All the best,
Paul Carragher.
