Call for Papers:
"`Return of the Repressed': Brecht Now!"
a panel to be presented at
The Third Annual Crossroads in Cultural Studies Conference
Birmingham, England, June 21-25, 2000
Please submit proposals that address the following panel description:
In one of the many reappraisals of Brecht's work that emerged from last
year's centenary, Fredric Jameson observed: "Brecht would have been
delighted at an argument, not for his greatness, or his canonicity, nor even
for some new and unexpected value of posterity (let alone for his
`postmodernity'), as rather for his usefulness right now." We take this as
a call to initiate a project, namely, a (re)reading of Brecht that
establishes a dialogue between his work and a host of more recent cultural
practices to which this diverse oeuvre might speak. We aim to situate
Brecht's writings in our political and cultural present: that is, within our
post-cold-war, late-capitalist moment--what some call postmodernity--with
all the ambiguities and contentions these characterizations provoke.
This panel will consist of five 20 minute presentations. Please send
proposals of around 300 words to the following address (either mail or
email):
