Hi Dave: I enquired about sea urchins some time ago. One responce
from Dr Carl Philips (formerly of the Institute of Archaeology in
London), told me about his findings of large sea urchins spines from
a site called Ras Mujallab Hedi, located in Little Aden, dating
between 1400 and 850 BC. He thought some of the large sea urchin
spines (8 cm long) and quite rounded, could have been used as a tool.
He mentoined an article from Vincent Charpentier but did not have
the complete refernce, the article gives example of people using
sea urchin spines as files for manufacture of shell fishing-hooks. If
anyone has the full reference I would also be grateful to have the
full information, or the if anyone knows the whereabouts of Dr Carl
Philips.
Best wishes
