I'd like to make a pitch for Shakespeare actually being a good
alternative to anthologies for starting out on poetry: he is one of
those from whom in Pound's phrase one can "get it all." He also is of
great immediate appeal, as witness the fact that he still regularly
sells out The Globe all summer. (Did anyone else see Vanessa Redgrave
as Prospero? What did you think?) And no one else brings home quite so
effectively that true poetry is about fucking, dying, and other things
which rarely happen in English classes.

Poetry must be as new as foam, and as old as the rock.
