Dear David and Ross,
There are several overviews of design research and its subfields in the
literature. Nigel Cross, Chris Jones and Ernst Eder have each produced
well known overviews. Providing an overview of that gives the authors
particular slant on Design Research almost a prerequisite in texts so
as to alleviate the problems of lack of agreement and confusion about
terms and concepts. One overview of the theoretical field that I have
found particularly useful (it includes a helpful diagram) is in Konda,
S., Monarch, I., Sargent, P. and Subrahmanian, E. 1992, 'Shared Memory
in Design: A Unifying Theme for Research and Practice', Research in Engineering
Design, vol. 4, pp. 23-42.
I look forward to seeing other researchers answers!
Best wishes
Terry Love
