You'll also extensively find references to 'design' emerging in the
sustainability (and Environmental Management) literature . See for example:
Hawken, P. The Ecology of Commerce
Jackson, T, Material Concerns
Von Weiszacker, Lovins and Lovins, Factor Four
Hawken, Lovins and Lovins, Natural Capitalism
Most interest, this is not just in the sense of a blind technocentrism, but
redesigning our fundamentally flawed systems of production and
consumption... its really encouraging from both perspectives
Jackson writes: "By contrast the preventive approach is about foresight. It
must therefore operate during the conceptualisation and during the design of
service systems. The importance of appropriate design can scarcely be
overemphasised." p.64
Hawken writes: "As hard as we may try to become sustainable on a
company-by-company level, we cannot fully suceed until the institutions
surrounding commerce are re-designed. Just as every act in an industrial
society leads to environmental degradation, regardless of intention, we must
design a system where the opposite is true, where doing good is like falling
of a log, where the natural, everyday acts of work and life accumulate into
a better world as a matter of course, not a matter of conscious altruism."

Subject: Influence of design research
Very true. As an example, have a look at the following article:
'In defense of strategy as design' which appeared in the California
Management review, spring 2000, Volume 42, issue 3, page 8 - 23. Author:
Jeanne Liedtka. She looks at the use of design theories in the field of
strategic management and suggests that it is worth looking at design
because it 'offers a window into a deeper understanding of the process of
strategy making'.
Kind regards,
