I am a newcomer to this list, and in the process of exploring
opportunities to pursue a PhD in Design, or about design. Thus my
question is framed by that.
There seems to be 2 ways to proceed with a PhD in design research,
one is from a Design program, the other is to study design from some
other framework, such as from the social sciences, humanities, or
specific aspects of design research within engineering or computer
science programs.
The question I pose is what is the essential difference of a PhD in
Design (from a Design program) in contrast with a PhD about design
(from outside a design program) ?
It would seem that design research is activity which is not really
bounded by its own knowledge but rather uses knowledge and
methodologies from other disciplines applied to design in order to
create a discourse around design (which as an aside, makes its
process similar to that of Cultural Studies, which might be one
reason why the Canon discussion evolved as it did). As such I am
curious to discover what a PhD in Design would offer that a PhD about
design would not offer.
