At the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science the independent
research unit directed by H. Otto Sibum offers a
research position.
The candidate should contribute to the ongoing historical investigation of
either of the two major cultural transition periods in the exact/physical
sciences circa 1800 and 1900. Of particular interest are investigations of
non-literary knowledge traditions in the arts, crafts, engineering and
science. Outstanding historians of science or technology as well as historians
exploring the boundary work of these knowledge traditions, or related research
themes (such as, for example, educational practices in the sciences and
engineering, material representations of knowledge, etc.), are invited to
apply. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in history of science or technology, in
history or in science, and a strong publication profile. Research experience
abroad is of advantage.
The position is a two-year Research Fellow (assistant professor level in the
American system) starting in 01.10. 2000 (a later date is negotiable).
Remuneration is according to the German academic pay-scale (Bat IIa/Ib, with
customary benefits). Woman candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.
