Commercial Director

This new senior director who will take full responsibility for sales and
marketing across the business. Reporting to the Managing Director, for whom
you will deputise, you will operate with considerable independence and
latitude of responsibility. The purpose of the job will be to maximise sales
through the effective management and integration of all aspects of the sales
and marketing department, creating and implementing sales and marketing
strategies to deliver planned growth.

A proven business developer with extensive international sales and marketing
experience, your background should demonstrate strong decision-making,
leadership and entrepreneurial skills, with proven ability to build, manage
and motivate teams, including senior direct reports.  With a record of
negotiating and achieving results in a customer-centred environment, you
will have the interpersonal skills and presence to be expected of a senior
commercial manager.

Reporting to the Commercial Director, you will manage a team of field sales
managers and take responsibility for your own territory, probably Germanic
Europe.

You will define and implement sales strategies and plans for all products
and services and propose, negotiate and agree budgets, targets and forecasts
for both direct and indirect channels to market.  In this context you will
need to manage key relationships across the global agency distribution
network to ensure the achievement of revenue and profit targets, and manage,
motivate and develop a direct sales team of senior sales professionals.

Educated to degree level, your background will include at least five years'
successful sales/sales management experience, gained in an international,
preferably publishing, environment.  Your interpersonal, leadership and
communication skills will be demonstrated by your having successfully
negotiated, influenced and persuaded at all levels in your career to date.

bookseller and publishing markets, where there is considerable potential for
growth for both existing and new products.  Your role will operate
internationally with initial focus on Europe.

Your background will ideally include at least three years' successful sales
experience gained within international publishing or bookselling.  We will
also consider candidates with an exceptional knowledge of these markets,
whose experience is other than sales.

A good understanding of electronic information products is essential as is
an understanding of both UK and overseas markets.  The ability to speak more
than one major European language would be a distinct advantage.
