"The Historical Geography of the Book" -- Call for Papers
**Deadline, 25th January 2000**
Social Science History Association Annual Convention, 26th - 29th October,
2000, Pittsburgh, PA.
The theme for the overall conference is "Looking backward and looking
forward: perspectives on social science history."
Proposals are being accepted for research papers on the "Historical
Geography of the Book." Papers on any aspect of the spatial history of
print culture will be considered. This session (or sessions) will be
presented within the Historical Geography Network of the SSHA. Thus papers
must take a geographical perspective within a single country or across
national boundaries.
The SSHA strongly encourages participation from graduate students and recent
PhDs as well as more established scholars.
Print culture has been represented at the SSHA conferences in both 1998 and
1999. The Historical Geography Network of the SSHA is an excellent forum
both for "spreading the word" about the history of print culture among
social science historians, and for exploring interdisciplinary connections
in "spatial history."
Further details about the Historical Geography Network and the Social
Science History Association can be found at: http://www.ipums.umn.edu/~ssha/

Proposals should be submitted to Fiona Black or Bertrum MacDonald, the

Historical Geography Network Co-Chairs. Submissions or enquiries should be
