Many thanks to colleagues who replied to my recent request
for information about the Athenian Badminton Library
referred to in Shafts, 4 (2), February 2000.
I now know that the term "Badminton Library" was connected
with a nineteenth century series of books on individual
sports, especially country and field sports, much collected
in country houses, and named after Badminton House, seat of
the Duke of Beaufort. I do not have any evidence as yet
that the library referred to in Athens collected sporting
material primarily and would be glad of any further
references.
Many thanks to Dr Peter Reid and Peter Freshwater for
their expert assistance.
