These terms need to be defined (and of course they are essentially
undefinable). Do the scientists need to have a library school degree? Can
the librarians be library scientists? Do we admit that many library
positions in the past were sinecures? If so, how can we ourselves get one
today?
The question acquires pathological dimensions in the history of
musicians as music librarians. Berlioz is acceptable because he read; but
if the rumors were correct, that Leonard Bernstein was asked to become
Chief of the LC Music Division, what might he have done to MARC music
cataloguing?
