We apologise if you have seen this before...
The second volume of The Journal of the Virtual Explorer is now
available on the web and it is dedicated to Win Means in recognition of
his enormous contributions to Geology.
This volume may be viewed online at:
http://virtualexplorer.com.au/VEjournal/Volume2/
This 1200 Mb volume contains 19 contributions with topics based on
theoretical, experimental and field studies. Over 200 computer
animations and analogue movies are presented, together with over 2000
digital images of experimentally and naturally deformed rocks.
There are 7 contributions showcasing synkinematic transmitted
light experiments, the technique which Win Means played such a major
role in developing. 90 experiments are stored as QuickTime movies,
including movies of materials undergoing phase changes during
deformation, deformation of
partially molten aggregates, and dynamic recrystallisation. These movies
allow fundamental grain-scale processes to be observed first-hand.
It contains research articles on subjects ranging
from diffusion around augen, metamorphic differentiation, and migmatites
to the interpretation of magma chamber elongation in terms of borehole
breakout.
Highlights also include a comprehensive set of high resolution images of
microstructures of experimentally and naturally deformed rocks. Teaching
resources for the optical orientation imaging technique, a
self-contained course on deformation microstructures, and an interactive
tutorial on Mohr Circles. It also includes comprehensive review papers
on folding, vein formation, and the development of axial plane
foliations.
