In case you missed the first announcement, here's a brief recap:
HILP 5 will be held 11-13 January 2001 at the University of Potsdam,
Germany. Abstracts are invited in all areas of phonology, and particularly on
the conference theme:
Conflicts in Phonology
We welcome talks on conflicts between different aspects of phonology,
but also between phonology and other domains of grammar, like syntax,
morphology and semantics.
Besides the main conference, there will be three workshops. Workshop
themes will be:
o Intonation in OT
o Stratification of the lexicon and the phonology of loanwords
o Language acquisition (with an emphasis on the areas of
learnability, acquisition and typology, and acquisition of
stored representations)
Please submit 6 copies of an abstract of maximally 2 pages (plus 1 of
references) by 1 October 2000. Only one of the abstracts should identify the
author and her/his affiliation.

Professor/Reader in Linguistics at the Jordanstown campus;
specialisation open (theoretical or applied). The appointee will
contribute to the further development of research programmes in
linguistics. To this end the appointee will be expected to:
Undertake research in linguistics at Jordanstown and disseminate the
findings of such research as appropriate, including publication in high
quality peer-reviewed journals.
Supervise postgraduate (doctoral) research students in the area of
linguistics.
Seek external funding to support research programmes (where appropriate).
Participate in appropriate administrative duties. Teaching loads will
be commensurate with the level of the post. Applicants must have a
first or second class honours degree, and a higher degree primarily by
research in linguistics or a cognate area and have substantial
research and teaching experience congruent with the level of
appointment, evidence of research planning for publications and for
grant funding (where appropriate) in the next five years.
They must have experience of research staff and postgraduate student
supervision and be eligible for inclusion in the 2000/2001 Research
Assessment Exercise (RAE) at grade 5. The successful applicant may be
offered an appointment at professorial level if he/she has a doctorate
in linguistics or a cognate area and has made significant
contributions in the field of linguistics, achieving internal
recognition in their specialism.

Postdoctoral Research Position in Dublin City University
The Visual Media Processing Group (VMPG) in the Research Institute for
Networks and Communications Engineering (RINCE) at Dublin City University
(DCU), is seeking for a candidate of European Union Member State and
Associated State nationality (excepting Irish nationals) to fill the
following vacant research position:
Postdoctoral researcher for a total appointment period of 24 months, start
date to be negotiated. Salary will be in the range 37,000 EUR - 41,000
EUR, per annum plus travel allowance.
The successful candidate will become a member of a rapidly expanding
research group and take on a coordinating role in the A-VISAGE
(Audio-Visual Indexing and Summarisation Adapted to GEnre) project.
Applicants should have completed a Ph.D. and have research expertise in
the field of audio compression and analysis. A good working knowledge of
ISO/IEC MPEG audio compression would be beneficial. Very good
knowledge of English is highly desirable.

Temporary Phonetics Lecturers Wanted
The Speech & Language Sciences Group at Leeds Metropolitan University is
seeking a Part-Time Temporary Lecturer or Lecturers in Phonetics.
The following teaching is required. Although all of this teaching is to students
of Speech & Language Therapy, experience in teaching S< students is
not specifically required. Applicants are welcome to apply to teach these
elements separately.
Acoustic Phonetics
3 hours per week during Autumn Term 2000 introducing theory of Acoustic
Phonetics and practical instrumental work. The Phonetics Laboratory has
been refurbished and re-equipped during 1999-2000.
Phonetics & Phonology
2 hours per week for the whole academic year 2000-1 introducing Phonetics
and the Phonetics and Phonology of English to first-year students.
Practical Phonetics
2 hours per week for the whole academic year 2000-1 introducing Practical
Phonetics to first-year students. This involves teaching both the IPA and
phonemic transcription of English.
Phonological Theory/Psycholinguistics
1 hour per week during Semester 2 2001 introducing phonological theory and
phonological processing to second-year students.
Child Phonology
1 hour per week during Semester 2 2001 introducing first-year students to
analytical skills in child phonology.

Irish Phonology/Speech Synthesis - Research/ Dublin, Ireland
1 studentship in Irish phonology; 1 studentship in speech synthesis
Two funded research studentships are currently available within a
collaborative project between the Departments of Lingusitics and
Computer Science in University College Dublin, Ireland. Both
positions are available from October 2000, and each carries an annual
tax-free stipend of IEP 7,500.- together with full fee remission.
Initial funding is for 2 years. Candidates interested in pursuing
either a masters or a Ph.D. in either discipline will be considered.
The first candidate will assist in the formalization of Irish phonology
for use in a non-linear phonological model. A working knowledge of
Irish and some familiarity with basic phonological theory are
required.
The second candidate will work in the development of a speech
synthesis system based on the output of the phonological model.
Familiarity with speech processing in general and with synthesis in
particular are required. This position does not require a knowledge
of Irish.

Education Special Interest Group - EduSIG - which has been set up under
the auspices of the International Speech Communication Association (ISCA,
formerly ESCA).
The idea of the Group is to promote interest worldwide in education in any
aspect of speech studies. We are currently developing the mailing list and a
website - there will be discussion groups, collaborative work on teaching
materials development and sharing of existing materials. Although the Group
is only just getting off the ground you can help make it a success quickly
by registering your name on the mailing list to begin with. Do this by
accessing the list-website (as opposed to the Group website) and entering
your details. Notices there tell you how to participate, including sending
