Subject: [cultstud-l] CFP:Inaugural International Media Conference
2nd CALL FOR PAPERS
Global Village or Global Image?
Representing Diversity and Difference
24-27 July 2001, London, UK.
Increasingly, we are faced with the notion that media images are part of a
process of globalisation, but to what extent are different people, places
and political viewpoints linked together? Who is being excluded from these
representations? Are we moving towards a global village or simply a global
image? This conference offers a unique forum for addressing the above
questions and encouraging discussions examining cultural diversity and media
between internationally recognised academics, film makers, institutions,
policy makers, and the wider community.
Key Themes:
Media, Identity and Place
Murder, (Mis)Adventure and Making News
Media, Community and Social Inclusion
Governments, MNCs and Regulation
The Politics of Old and New Media
Learning and Creativity
Opening Keynote Speaker: bell hooks, renowned author on gender, race and
cultural politics, with extensive writings including, Yearning: Race,
Gender, and Cultural Politics (1990), Black Looks: Race and Representation
(1992), Killing Rage: Ending Racism (1995), and All About Love: New Visions
(2000).
