M/C - A Journal of Media and Culture

Editorial Positions Available
A number of opportunities are now available with the award-winning Internet
journal M/C -- A Journal of Media and Culture. The M/C editorial collective
is searching for energetic people to fill the following volunteer positions
by the end of 2000. M/C is known internationally as the leading online
journal in its area, and we're now looking for people who can help it
continue its high standard of work to further expand its influence and
value in media and cultural studies. The mandate of the journal is to move
ideas outwards and to tread the line between the popular and the academic
in both subject matter and in writing style. If this interests you and you
can get involved in such a project, the following positions are available:
Coordinating Editor of M/C
--------------------------
As Coordinating Editor you would be responsible for handling the day-to-
day flow of messages that come into the journal from prospective writers,
members of the editorial collective and others interested in the journal.
You would manage the M/C mailing-list, which helps make members of the
editorial collective aware of editorial meetings and administrative
issues; and you would manage the Media-Culture list, which is designed to
be a place for the exploration of ideas around media and cultural studies
that are of interest to its subscribers.
The Coordinating Editor also manages the timetable of issue deadlines and
ensures that these are met by the issue editors and their writers. With
that in mind, the Coordinating Editor puts out calls for articles for
issues, and publicises the current issue and other M/C events through
various lists and Websites. A database of contacts for email publicity,
article refereeing and general contacts is also maintained and updated by
the Coordinating Editor.
It is also the responsibility of the Coordinating Editor to ensure that
all material about the activities connected to M/C is on the M/C Online
site, and that regular updates are made (in conjunction with the
Production Editor).
An essential requirement is that you can attend in person the fortnightly
meetings of the M/C editorial collective (these are currently held on
Monday afternoons at 2 p.m.) at the University of Queensland in Brisbane.
The Coordinating Editor is at the heart of the M/C collective that
maintains the relatively rapid flow of issues and events.
Working hours: flexible, upwards of six hours per week with greater
commitment expected towards issue release times. Own equipment and Net
access are necessary.
Production Editor of M/C
------------------------
The Production Editor is responsible for getting the materials that are
developed by writers and issue editors published on the Website in time.
The Production Editor must be comfortable with advanced DHTML and
scripting as well as with Web design software such as Arachnophilia and
Dreamweaver, able to do the marking-up of submitted articles in accordance
with M/C design templates, and be generally experienced in Web design with
the ability to develop the site further. This is a position that requires
the ability to work closely with issue editors to get articles ready for
publication. The Production Editor has to be an efficient computer power-
user and Web-savvy, which also means that they must be able to search the
Web effectively for links that relate to M/C articles. We are seeking
intermediate to advanced applicants for this position.
The Production Editor must enjoy the process of copyediting in a Web-
oriented way. They must be able to ensure everything conforms to the MLA
style used in M/C as well as to other standards used on-site. The
Production Editor is responsible for the uploads of material from all
sources, and either a background in or willingness to learn about audio
streaming, manipulation and handling of graphics/moving images, and in the
future possibly video streaming, are interesting additional skills.
Like the Coordinating Editor, the Production Editor is at the core of M/C
and must be able to attend the fortnightly meetings with the editorial
collective at the University of Queensland in Brisbane.
Working hours: concentrated around issue releases, with some ongoing site
maintenance during other times. Own equipment and Net access are necessary.
Publicity Coordinator for M/C
-----------------------------
For this newly created role we are looking for an enthusiastic,
independently motivated person to take on the needs and requirements of
promotion and publicity for M/C and M/C Reviews.
As the M/C Publicity Coordinator you would work on connecting M/C Reviews
further into the Brisbane community both through online links and public
events; work on making institutions and libraries more aware of the
activities of M/C nationally and internationally; put out flyers and other
publicity forms for M/C sponsored events and advertise each special issue
with leaflets and flyers.
You would also be expected to develop, under your own direction, other
initiatives to further M/C's vibrant international connections, by
creatively developing publicity and promotion campaigns for the journal in
order to continue raising M/C's profile and to maintain its national and
international renown.
Working hours: ongoing commitment expected to be around five hours per
week, peaking around issue release times and other special events
In any of these three roles, as a member of the editorial collective you
will be participating in a growing, internationally connected, vibrant
media community that is at the leading edge of Web technologies and part of
the Australian Public Intellectual Network. All members of the editorial
collective work on an unpaid basis.
If one of these positions sounds like what you want to do for the next
year or two and you want to get involved in one of the most active and
innovative spots around, then contact Axel Bruns at mc@mailbox.uq.edu.au...
