Dear all,
Now that Fred has announced his move back to the US may I take this
opportunity to thank him in public for all of his efforts in keeping
the PKSG seminar programme alive and well since ESRC funding was
withdrawn. In addition Fred has launched the AHE conference which was a
great success last year and promises to be so this year.
Since Fred has been in the UK I have come to know him well and admire
his drive, organisational and academic abilities. I have also
thoroughly enjoyed both vigorous debates and collaboration with him on
matters of pricing and methodology. Fred, you will be a big loss for us
in the UK but the US will benefit from your presence.
Needless to say we must strive to keep Fred's initiatives moving
forward so can I remind you all that there will be three seminars
this academic year (see Fred's memo).
An update on my particular seminar is that Douglas Mair will be
presenting a paper on Full employment 'gift horse or Trojan horse',
Matthias Klaes (currently at the Erasmus Institute but will soon move
to Keele) will be presenting a paper on 'The role of residual
categories in the development of economic research traditions'. This is
a metatheoretical paper in which two strategies to deal with dualisms -
synthesis and fragmentation - are explored in two historical case
studies: general equilibrium theory, and the development of the concept
of transaction costs. I also have a promise of papers from Ken Coutts
and Stephen Dunn. Finally, Paul Davidson has hinted that he may be in
the UK at the time and may be able to attend - which would be excellent.
With best wishes to all - and once again to you Fred!
