Book news.
The list manager occasionally gets requests from editors,
authors or publishers to circulate to the list info on a
relevant new book.
As a guideline, unless I read howls of protest, I shall generally
accept to do this provided a copy of the book is sent to the reviews
editor of either JFLS or the AFLS Cahiers or both - for review.
There follows such a message from:

Subject: New book from Cambridge U P.
I'd like to ask whether
I could post a message regarding anew book which deals with automated
speech translation between French English and Swedish. The message I would
like to submit would be as below:
I am delighted to tell you about a great new title from Cambridge:
The Spoken Language Translator
by Manny Rayner, David Carter, Pierrette Bouillon, Vassilis Digalakis and
Mats Wiren
* This is the first major book about a state-of-the-art speech translation
system
* One of a very small number of books that give detailed descriptions of
large implemented speech-understanding systems
* The book describes how many different techniques, both statistical and
rule-based, were combined to create the SLT system
The book describes the Spoken Language Translator (SLT) which can translate
between French, English and Swedish in the domain of air travel planning,
with an accuracy of about 75% and a vocabulary of 1500 words.
