Clinical Haematology (1977) gives under alkali denaturation test:
Fetal haemoglobin (and also HbBarts), when treated with alkali, is
more slowly converted to alkaline haematin than is adult
haemoglobin......The test is of particular use in the detection of
fetal bleeding in utero, revealed by the presence of HbF in vaginal
bleeding in the mother....

One wonders though about the difficulty of distinguishing pink or
yellow in a brown background....
