Applications are invited for a two year fixed-term contract
in the Archaeozoology Laboratory, Museum of New Zealand.
TE PAPA'S MISSION STATEMENT: The Museum of New Zealand
Te Papa Tongarewa is a forum for the nation to present, explore
and preserve the heritage of its cultures and knowledge of
the natural environment in order to better understand and
treasure the past, enrich the present and meet the
challenges of the future.
POSITION TITLE: Research Assistant Archaeozoology, Museum of
New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa
JOB OBJECTIVE: The research assistant will contribute to
Bridge and Barrier, a research programme on pre-European
Maori occupation in Cook Strait, New Zealand. He or she will
be particularly concerned with the analysis of faunal
material from archaeological sites and the ongoing
development of the modern comparative collection for use in
this analysis.
REPORTS TO: The Programme Leader, Dr Janet Davidson, to
produce the necessary outputs to a satisfactory standard and
meet all deadlines; The Research Leader, Dr Foss Leach, for
day to day activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES/TASKS:
RESEARCH TASKS: Assist with the analysis of faunal
collections from archaeological sites in New Zealand and the
Pacific Islands. Assist with the preparation of standard
osteological comparative material and with statistical
analysis of bone measurements. Take part in collecting
expeditions at sea to develop the comparative collection.
Carry out literature research on the archaeology and biology
of marine organisms, and draft reports on these. Perform
routine laboratory tasks, such as photocopying, word
processing, data entry, and maintaining tidy work areas.
INPUT AS PART OF CORE PROJECTS: Participate in the
generation of ideas and the implementation of Core Projects
as required.
SCHOLARSHIP AND MATAURANGA MAORI: To work with
colleagues in
positioning Te Papa as an organisation that speaks with
authority on scholarship and Matauranga Maori and maintains
good relationships with key participants, including iwi.
Research and other activities relating to natural and
cultural history at the Museum are developed in a
coordinated and increasingly interdisciplinary manner;
KEY OUTPUTS: Delivery of the FRST Bridge & Barrier project
to agreed standards and time frames. The Museum is respected
by the community as an institution which speaks with
authority backed by scholarship and Matauranga Maori; The
Museum maintains positive relationships with the community;
Collections are documented as fully and accurately as
possible and are made available to the public; The
collections are used to initiate, contribute to and support
Core Projects research.
PERSON SPECIFICATIONS (GENERIC):
BICULTURALISM:

of Waitangi, and an ability to provide leadership
An awareness of te reo Maori and customary concepts.

PERSON SPECIFICATIONS (SPECIFIC):
QUALIFICATIONS:
Postgraduate thesis in archaeology: Minimum MA or BA Hons
level.
Academic interest and performance record in the field of
prehistoric subsistence economics, particularly marine
food exploitation.
Proven ability to work satisfactorily in a small research
team in a laboratory environment.
Ability to write up research results to publication
standard.
Good computer keyboard skills and familiarity with a wide
variety of software and different operating systems.
ADDTIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Current driver's licence.
Willingness to spend periods at sea in fishing boats
collecting modern specimens.
Proficiency in swimming.
Neat legible handwriting and ability to maintain this
when cataloguing large numbers of items.
Experience in a programming language would be an
advantage.
SALARY RANGE:
$25,000-35,000, depending on experience and
qualifications
