Call for papers
The Centre for Gender Studies in Europe at Sheffield
University together with colleagues from the universities
of York and Leeds are organising an interdisciplinary
conference on the gendered notion of political letters. We
aim to uncover new ways of examining gendered political
literacy through letter writing. Letters have been studied
as a privileged space for literary, social, and cultural
expression. This conference will take epistolary studies
further by presenting work on studies of written
correspondence from 1750 to the present concerning
politics in the widest sense. Of particular interest are the
following aspects:
·international connections in the global community
of Britain in Europe, the USA and Australasia;
·political prisoners’ letters;
·letters of political militants;
·letters of famous and unknown women;
·letters of wives of prominent politicians and
activists;
·correspondence giving political commentary on
the details of every day lives during war or
revolutionary upheaval;
·local politics and community relations in
Yorkshire;
·correspondence about family relations,
parenthood, childhood.
The organisers intend to publish an edited collection of
the papers. Potential contributors are invited to submit
proposals of 400 words in length to present papers on the
above themes or on related issues. Please send them no
later than 30 June 2000 to Dr Caroline Bland or Dr. Máire
F. Cross (Conference Organisers) Centre for Gender
Studies in Europe, Department of French, University of
Sheffield, SHEFFIELD GB S10 2 TN.
