** Data Protection Act 1998

The 1998 Data Protection Act came into force on 1st March. NISS has worked
previously with the Registrar's Office to make the Data Protection
Register available online, and information about the Register has been
updated to reflect changes brought about as a result of the new Act.
A new feature of the Register site is online notification. The system has
two interfaces - the public online notification pages and also private
administration pages for use by the Data Protection Registrar.
The public interface to the Register site is available at
http://www.dpr.gov.uk - here you can find information about notification,
an online notification form, and you can also search the Register.
The Data Protection Registrar home page is at
http://www.dataprotection.gov.uk/ and includes a "Search the Register of
data users" link to the new details about notification.
** Links to UK local authorities

A set of links to those UK local authorities with responsibilities for
education has recently been added to the main NISS website. The quality
of information provided by each authority varies, but it could be a useful
starting point for information about schools or for contact names when
querying student grants and loans, as well as for other local government
information for your area. You will find the details in the World area of
the website, under UK Government, and the URL of the first page is:
