The Australian Bureau of Statistics produces a publication called
the Directory of Transport Statistics (Catalogue number 1132.0).
Details are available on their web site: http://www.abs.gov.au/
Also Austroads produces a book called Road Facts which has
statistics on various aspects of the Australian road system.

Reminds us that Australia is a Federation (Each State has its
own data at various levels)
so the Ministries of Transport and the Road Traffic and
main Roads departments usually have their own data etc.
Marcus also points out that there is no current national transport
survey (although one was done in 1986 that is still very useful).
