Thanks to Dr. Raju for letting us know about the discovery and
display of the Hess Incubator in Chicago.
I believe the Smithsonian owns at least one, possibly more, Hess
Incubators, but they do not appear to be doing much in the way of
displays in this area.
Dr. Joseph Bolivar DeLee, at the Chicago Lying-In Hospital used
Lion-type incubators for his premature infant unit starting in 1898.
Dr. Martin Couney also used these same Lion-type incubators. They were
essentially the same as the ones developed by Mr. Lion, an engineer in
France at the end of the 19th Century. They were probably all
manufactured by the New York Incubator Company under license from Mr.
Lion. To the best of my knowledge there are no known extant Lion
Incubators anywhere in the U.S. or Europe. We all hope one of these
will be found one day, to be refurbished and put on display. They were
actually much better incubators than the Hess Incubator because they
provided a much better view of the infant. That is why Dr. Couney found
them so attractive for his World's Fair and boardwalk infant incubator
exhibits. The Lion incubator is the forerunner of the modern incubator
in most aspects of its design and function.
