Some time ago during the discussions on this net re: The Beach, there was a
comment to the effect that research in Australia on backpackers indicated
that their financial contribution to the country, and especially to the
grassroots elements, was greater in many cases than that of the more
conventional tourist. I have a student who is doing research in Guatemala
on backpackers, and he would be very interested in having more specific
information, as well as references if possible, on this in Australia and
