They _are_ allowed in UNIX pathnames, they're just not a good idea because
you always have to quote them when using on the command line. The only
character I can think of off the top of my head which _cannot_ appear in a
UNIX directory or filename is '/', for obvious reasons. Lots of other
characters, such as space, have good reason to be avoided where possible.
