The following is posted on behalf of Innerpeffray Library.
Apologies for cross-posting.
***************************************************
The Library at Innerpeffray near Crieff, Scotland, Scotland’s oldest
lending library founded in 1680, has recently been granted lottery
funding for the on-line cataloguing of its printed holdings. The
Library is therefore seeking to appoint a full-time cataloguer to carry
out this work, in conjunction with the Librarian, on a short-term
contract.
The collection is wide ranging and totals some 3,000 titles pre-1801 and
1400 titles post 1800. As befits a library founded in the 17th century,
there is a large preponderance of Bibles and theological works, but
history, literature and natural history are also richly represented.
The main duties will be:
1. To match the Library’s pre-1801 British holdings against the ESTC
file and to report them.
2. To copy records sent by the ESTC into the Library’s database, and
adapt them to in-house standards.
3. To catalogue the Library’s foreign and post-1800 holdings, by
downloading records from remote databases or by creating original
records.
Candidates should have experience of using rare books, and a knowledge
of historical bibliography would be an advantage. Some familiarity with
on-line cataloguing in MARC format would be desirable, but training
could be given if necessary. A good user’s knowledge of IT as well as
the ability to work efficiently and accurately are essential. It is
anticipated that the successful candidate may be asked to spend a period
at the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh receiving training in
ESTC procedures. Due to the remote location of the Library, private
transport must be available to candidates.
A fixed sum is available for the remuneration package. The length of
employment will therefore depend on the experience and qualification of
the successful candidate, but is likely to be between 7 and 9 months.
Accommodation could be available at Innerpeffray, if required, by
arrangement.
Please send applications by letter with CV to:
